Important changes to how we handle store credit and bottle return credit for our online shoppers...

TLDR [Quick summary]: Now instead of emailing gift cards for the bottles you leave on your front step we will be issuing store credit within the Shopify account system. It's better.

Hello valued Inner North Online Shop users!  And a very special hello to all our subscribers (as this change will affect you the most).

As you are probably aware we operate a pretty unique (and uniquely awesome) Bottle Deposit/Return Scheme.  You will also potentially be aware that if you qualify for local delivery on our online shop, then you can return your bottles directly to our delivery person by leaving them out on your front step and when we come drop off your order we will take the empty bottle away with us and issue you a shop credit of $2/bottle.

Currently, we do this by issuing a gift card code once a month with the bottle deposit credits loaded onto it.  This code is emailed to you and you can use it on our online shop.  It's a system that works, but it also can be a frustrating system.  It's frustrating for us because we have to generate a bunch of low-value gift cards.  It is even more frustrating for customers because you can end up with lots of very low-value gift cards that you have to find amongst your emails.  Additionally, keeping track of which ones you've used (and not used) is one of those life admin things that some people excel at while the rest of us are at the brewery bar drinking beer talking about how insufferable those people are.

So what is changing?

Shopify, the online platform that our online shop uses, has made improvements to the functionality of their built in customer accounts system making it very easy to give a customer store credit within the account system.  So now, instead of emailing you a gift card code every month we will simply add the bottle deposit credit to your account so it will always be there for you when you go to checkout on our online shop.  No more looking for emails and copying and pasting a bunch of codes! So good! This means additionally, that your account will be credited more regularly, often instantly, when you return bottles - no more waiting a month!  These changes are effective immediately and they are retrospective, meaning that all existing gift card codes that were created in the last two years have been deactivated and the remaining credit has instead been added as store credit to your account. 

Here's how it works:

When you go to our online shop, you click log in up at the top of the page to log into your account.

Then, when you go to check out, under Payment Methods you select + Add Store Credit and tick the box to apply store credit to your purchase.
 
You will then see that store credit has been applied...
 

 

How can you check your store credit balance?

Go to our online shop, and log in to your account.  Then you click on your profile icon in the top right-hand corner and click on "profile". 

Then scroll to the bottom of your profile to the "Payment Methods" section and there you will find your store credit.
 
The exceptions and other fine print.
The exception to the above change is: gifts.  In the event that the purchaser is buying a gift for someone else, we do our best to ensure that the credit for the returned bottles goes to the person actually returning the bottles.  If we have the email for the bottle-returner but they don't have an account, we will continue to issue a gift card.  If we have no way to electronically issue credit to the bottle returner, or if we are unaware that the bottle returner and the purchaser are different people, then we will apply the credit to the purchaser's account.
Also this is a convenient moment to remind/inform everyone that online store credit is valid for two years from the date of issue.  After that, the expired portion of your store credit will be deducted from your account.  So you have plenty of time, but remember to use it or lose it!  For gift cards we have recently moved to store credit, We set all the new expiry for October 2026, so you have another 2 years.
