For a few years we brewed a beer called Just Chill that was a watermelon and cucumber gose (delicious), but this year we wanted to mix it up a bit, push the boundaries and take some risks. So we opted to go for a rockmelon, lime and mint gose instead.
So we brewed up a gose. Gose (Go-suh) is a beer style from Goslar, Germany that is distinguished from other sours in that it is also a touch salty. Once that was bubbling away, we emailed our fruit people, and asked for 5 trays of rockmelons, and 2 trays of limes. Then we got our brewer Jimmy and our bar maestro Joe to harvest their garden mint and bring it in to work. We processed all the fruit ourselves and chucked in nearly 50 kilograms of processed rockmelon and 6 litres of lime juice.
The result is confounding. Rockmelon is funky, we all know this to be true, and it has translated really interestingly into this beer. There is a punchy intense savouriness from the rockmelon and some chardonnay characteristics. The salt emphasizes the umami from this funky flavour and is balanced out by the zing of lime and the subtle lift of mint. It’s thought provoking, but it works.
